Because baby towels are softer, they are usually made of materials such as unbleached organic cotton, terrycloth, bamboo, and cotton velour. Some companies even sell baby towels that have flannel on one side, so you can pat the baby dry after the bath, and fleece on the other side to keep the baby warm after drying him or her off. Most towels will have at least one section (the hood or the lining) that has a colorful baby themed material.
Baby towels may vary in size. Most are square and they may be as small as 30” x 30”. If you plan on using these towels as your baby advances to the toddler stage, you may want to look for a larger size as some baby towels come in 36” x 36” size.
You will find that most baby towels are hooded on one corner. Babies lose a lot of their body heat through their head. When you take the baby out of the tub, wrapping him or her in a towel with a hood not only helps the baby keep warm, it also helps dry his or her hair hair. Some hooded baby towels even have Velcro on them so you can turn the towel into a robe for the baby.
To wash your baby towels, you may want to use a baby detergent such as Dreft. While it may be okay to use your regular clothes detergent, the dyes and scents that it contains might irritate the baby’s skin. While a freshly washed baby may seem incapable of producing bacteria, if a baby urinates or poops on the towel, bacteria can occur. You will want to wash the towels on the hot cycle so the water reaches at least 100 degrees centigrade (212 Fahrenheit). This will kill any bacteria left behind from the bathing experience. Dry the baby towels in the dryer to make them soft for the baby. If you have a towel warmer in your bathroom, use that for the baby towel until you are ready to dry the baby.
Once your baby becomes a toddler, he or she may still enjoy using the hooded baby towels. If not, it is time to graduate him or her to using adult towels.
